The OTOTAKE PROJECT began in 2018. The technology used is a robotic prosthetic leg technology developed by Sony Computer Science Laboratories (CSL).
On the above site, videos titled “OTOTAKE PROJECT 2018”, “OTOTAKE PROJECT 2019”, and “Two Years of the OTOTAKE Project” which were shown during the JST CREST xDiversity Symposium are introduced.

JST CREST xDiversity Symposium Super Welfare Exhibition Symposium “JST CREST xDiversity” @ Shibuya Hikarie 8th floor 8/ COURT
Summary: The xDiversity Project aims to overcome physical and ability difficulties through AI technology’s personal optimization and spatial visual-tactile technology. This symposium will discuss the developed prosthetic technology, the prospects of foundational technologies, and their real-world application challenges. In the second half, main members of xDiversity will discuss the role technology and AI can play in supporting societal diversity. This symposium was a significant moment where the full details of the OTOTAKE PROJECT were revealed.
Broadcast Date: November 13, 2018
JST CREST xDiversity Symposium – Goals of the Ototake Project
Summary: The xDiversity Project continues its aims as mentioned above. This symposium will discuss the journey of the OTOTAKE PROJECT over the past year, its future, and the evolution of technology and humanity.
Broadcast Date: September 3, 2019
xDiversity Talk Session – Ototake Prosthetic Project and its Future
Summary: The challenge that started in 2018 with Hirotada Ototake, who has a limb deficiency, using a robotic prosthetic has gained much attention. Many resonated with Ototake’s efforts, but some questioned the point of aiming for a walking motion with an unsuited body. This panel discussion will cover the significance of the Ototake prosthetic project and the future definition of the human body.
Broadcast Date: September 2, 2020
OTOTAKE PROJECT Result Presentation
OTOTAKE PROJECT Result Presentation
Summary: The OTOTAKE PROJECT, in collaboration with Hirotada Ototake, author of “Gotai Fumanzoku” (No One’s Perfect), and Ken Endo, a researcher at Sony CSL, aims to evolve the human body through robotics. The project began in 2018 with support from the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST CREST JPMJCR1781, JPMJCR19F2). The team consists of researchers like Endo, engineers designing the robotic prosthetics, prosthetists fitting Ototake, and physical therapists aiding with walking. The results of approximately three years of research were presented on September 28 at the Japan Science Future Museum.
